I saw a clip on YouTube with Joss Whedon describing the details of the episode of how he would have brought Tara back
These are his (and now my) guidelines:
1. Buffy gets granted one "get out of jail" wish with no restrictions. 2. Takes places in either the third or fourth to last episode. (I chose Empty Places). 3. Joss Whedon described the specific details of how she would be have been introduced back onto the show and I will use that. 4. For those of you who want the YouTube info, it is Comic-Con: Joss Whedon and is posted by AlohaJoe.
Now on with the Fanfiction

The street is full of cars. They are all moving in the same direction. Moving slowly in the same direction. People are walking through the street carrying their belongings. It is faster because they are not causing a traffic jam. All they have to worry about is weaving in and out of the traffic. Buffy Summers, the slayer, is walking among them. She has no belonging with her. She is not leaving town. She has to stay and fight. 'Funny' she thinks, 'I never thought I would see the day the Sunnydale population would realize something terrible was happening.' She walks by a car when she hears a familiar voice greet her. It's Clem. One of the few friendly demons she knows that she is actually friendly back to. He is driving a late model red VW Beetle. 'I guess he is leaving town to.'
"Hey, you."
"Hey."
"Can you believe this?"
"Yeah. You'd think these people had never seen an apocalypse before." She chuckles. "What about you? Just going for a quick spin to 7-Eleven?" Buffy asks this knowing it is wishful thinking, but not knowing what else to ask a good friend.
"It's getting bad here. Really bad. Hellmouth acting up again, people feeling it, getting crazier. You can't swing a cat without hitting some kind of demonic activity. Not that I swing cats, or eat - nope. Heh. Cuttin' way back. Cholesterol - morals. I mean, morals."
He looks frightened. Scared even. Thats when Buffy realizes. Once he leaves, after this conversation, she may never see him again. She gulps audibly. He doesn't notice. That makes her grateful. She tunes back into what he is saying.
"We've seen some bad stuff in this town before but, you know, this time, it's like it just seems different, more powerful. He shakes his head. "I don't think anyone's gonna be able to stop it." He must have realized who he was talking to because he gets a scared look when he looks at her again. "I mean, I'm sure you'll do fine. Complete confidence in you. Heh. Uh, if anyone can do it, you can, because you...rock! If you save the world, I'll come back, we'll have drinks. When. When, I mean. When you save the world." Buffy nods. She knows he isn't the bravest demon in the world, so she doesn't hold it against him. His next words touch her heart dearly. "Maybe... maybe you should just get out of town this time."
"Yeah. I probably should."
She watches as the traffic jam is suddenly gone and so is Clem. 'I wonder if I will ever see him again.'

Buffy was patrolling. With Bringers around she had been doing so in daylight a lot. She was in a fowl mood. She just left the hospital. Willow had looked so heartbroken at the two of them not playing card games with Xander. What she couldn't tell them was that spending time with Xander was hard right now. It was her fault his eye got poked out. So she made up a weak excuse about getting some files home and left as fast as she could.
"How's it going?"
Buffy whips around at the familiar voice. 'Whistler, great.'
"What do you want?"
"I'm here to give you a wish."
"Not what I was expecting, especially from you."
"To balance out everything you have done in nearly eight years the people I work for have decided to grant you a wish, free of any restrictions. Anything you want. Just shout my name and I'll be at you beck and call."
With that he was gone.

Buffy had a good wish. At first she considered winning the war against the First. But how. Knowing Whistler, it would have to be a specific wish and Buffy didn't know how, so that was out. So now she was off to see Xander.
Entering his private room, she noticed he was asleep. There was a nurse, checking his vitals. Buffy waited for her to finish. Once she left, she carefully woke him up.
"Sleepily he replied, "What's the matter Buff. Is it Will?" Panicking he asked, "O my G-"
"Calm down Xander it isn't Willow. It isn't anybody. I need to talk to you." Once he was calm she continued, "Do you remember Whistler, the balancing demon I told you about." Xander nodded. "For all the work I've done his bosses are granting me a wish." Xander was taken aback. "And I was thinking..."
"No!"
"What."
"No, Buffy. I don't need my eye back. Yes I would like it back, but there are other things like the world that are more important."
"I thought of that, but I think the wish has to be specific and since I don't know HOW to save the world we'd still be screwed."
"Oh. I still don't want it back." He saw the look on Buffy's face and realize what this was really about. "I don't blame you Buffy."
A weight seemed to fall off her shoulders and she threw herself at him in a giant bear hug. She meekly apologized when he groaned in pain.

Faith's sitting alone on the counter top in Buffy's kitchen eating potato chips from a bag when Kennedy walks in from the basement.
"You got enough to share?"
"Trade ya for a carton of cigarettes and some soap." Faith turns to see the confused look on Kennedy's face. "Sorry. Habit." She hands Kennedy the bag. "Shouldn't you be down at Hogwarts?"
"Probably, Kennedy replies through a mouthful of chips before handing the bag back to Faith.
"All right. Playin' hooky. Score one for the boarding school brat. Anya's technique's probably a little different than what you're used to."
The see Amanda walk in from the basement."Do you think there are gonna be questions about her sex life on the test? 'Cause I really hope I don't have to study all that."
"Yeah. Whenever she starts talking about getting all sweaty with Xander like that I just remind her I had him first. Shuts her right the hell up."
"Thing is - what's the point?" Kennedy asked. "Studying demon hot zones and pressure points doesn't do a hell of a lot of good when preacher man's out there, ready to finish the job he started."
"No one's come up with any info on Caleb yet?" Faith asked.
"No. Nothing is working - not research, not Anya's contacts," Amanda said.
"We're lousy with dead ends around here. Everyone's feeling pretty pointless. We don't even have a place to start," Kennedy said with an attitude. Faith had heard she tried to ask Willow out and got turned down. She was disappointed and it sometimes made her edgy about the Hellmouthy things when there was no H&H.
"Hey, who's here?" Faith heard Buffy from the other room.
Buffy comes into the house carrying the file Willow and Giles got from the police. She had nearly left it at the hospital and had to put it down in a safe place while patrolling so the fact that it is still with her is a surprise. Dawn, Faith, Amanda and Kennedy come into the room.
"Hey, Buffy, how's Xander?" Dawn asked.
Buffy puts on a genuine smile. Now that she knows he doesn't blame her and still thinks of others, she can tell the truth with a real smile. "He's doing really well. He's ready to come home, I think."
"Whatcha got?" Faith asked.
"Info that Giles and Willow were able to pull off the police database. We figured with Caleb's, you know, overt religiosity thing if we wanna learn more about him, let's find out where he's been."
Faith reads from the file: "Incidents of violence and vandalism connected to California religious institutions in the last 10 years." Looks like this gives us a place to start."
"Yeah. I figure we start with California. We don't find anything there, we'll expand the search. But a guy like Caleb didn't just get in the game. He's been playing for a while, and I wanna know where. Whatever it takes." Without a second thought she turns to Dawn and adds, "You want to help?"
"Well, I was gonna do lots and lots of homework, but darn the luck, they went and canceled school, so looks like I got the time."
"Try to find anything that looks like Caleb, his church, his ring..." Buffy started.
"His ability to render a slayer useless in just one punch." Buffy and Faith look up in shock at Kennedy's rudeness..
'Apparently Red's rejection really got to the H&H' Faith thought.
"I didn't - that was stupid. I don't know why I said that." Kennedy said in a genuine apology.
Buffy replies with a genuine smile. "It's OK. I have to go find Willow anyway. There were some things I needed to discuss with her."
After Buffy leaves the rest of the group continues the research in somewhat comfortable and uncomfortable silence.

This was the third day Buff was back at the hospital. This time it wasn't for Xander. This time it was for Willow. Entering Xander's room she found her playing card games with him.
"Willow."
"Buffy!" Buffy felt bad about earlier when she saw the joy in seeing Buffy there. "Are you here to play card games. We got Uno."
"Buffy could help but smile before it dimmed and she said, "Not so much Will." Before her face could fall she continued "I need to talk to you.
"Is it about..." Xander asked trailing off.
"Yeah."
Confused the redhead followed her friend into the hallway. After explaining everything, including Xander not wanting a new eye and not bing able to wish away The First's apocalypse, Willow looked at her as if she was stupid and said, "Buffy, if you're asking me what I want, you already know the answer to that."
Without another word Buffy walked away, leaving behind a confused redhead.

Buffy was proud of herself. She figured out what her wish was going to be and she even had a plan of action. But Xander's talk had made her realize that nobody would go for it. Forgiveness is hard to come by once, let alone more than once. For this plan she was going to need Spike. She walked through her front door just in time to hear Giles say, "Spike, I have a mission for you."
"No!"
Spike came out of the kitchen and said, "Got ta agree with her mate. Sometimes our missions end up with you trying to kill me. I'm not fond of those."
"This is bona fide... with real ramifications," Giles replied. "Take a look at this." Spike takes the magnifying glass out of Giles hand and studies the photo.
"Looks like our boy's been here. You want me to go check it out?"
"I need someone who can take care of themselves in case Caleb has... left some souvenirs."
"Still not gonna happen Giles. I know exactly what I'm going to do to Caleb and how I'm going to do it."
"May I ask-" Giles tried to ask.
"No." Then punctuation each word to make sure they struck a cord with Giles she said, "It's. For. Your. Own. Good."
Smiling Spike followed her out of the house.

Buffy had explained everything to Spike. Her plan and how she intended to fit her wish into it. And why he was a part of the plan. She trusted him. That was finally starting to sink into his brain. He never really believed it until now.
They had just got the weapon from Caleb out of the vineyard. He was gone. This weapon...this scythe, killed him There was no way Spike would have ever thought of avoiding a confrontation until they had the scythe. He preferred to fight. That was why Buffy was one of the best if not the best.
After that they had gotten Xander from the Hospital and were bringing him home. Before they did all this, Buffy had told Faith that there was a meeting tonight involving everybody. It was in five minutes. She also asked him to hide the scythe from Willow and Xander in his coat. It could barely fit without them noticing. But it did. That was the only part of the plan he didn't get and the only part she didn't explain. The four of them once again walked through Buffy's front door for what seemed like the one hundredth time that day. Buffy was last she said she'd be just a minute. Only Spike knew what she meant.

Buffy walks through the door to see a hastily made yellow banner painted with "WELCOME HOME" in big red letters hanging over the fireplace. Giles, Dawn and the potentials are gathered in the living room. Xander has been escorted to a chair in the front of the whole group. Xander in the room.
"We didn't have time to do more, " Kennedy said. "You have to pretend there's a big party here."
"That's fine. Parties in this house, I usually end up having to... rebuild something."
"Welcome home, Xander." I wanted everyone to be here for this. I think you'll be interested in what I've been doing today.

"What's going on Buffy?" Giles asked carefully.
"After my original trip to the hospital today, I went to work of some tension on some Bringers. And Whistler paid me a visit. He said that I've done so much for humanity that I could be granted a wish." Everyone but Willow and Xander looked towards him then glared at her. Xander declined the offer when I asked him about it and the wish needs to be specific enough that I can't just wish the apocalyse away. When he told me he never blamed me for what happened at the vineyard, a lot of things started making sense including what I needed to do involving Caleb. The problem was I had already given Giles the files. And in his hands lately, everything is dangerous"
Willow winced at that. She hated it when the Scooby Gang fought. "So before he could send Spike off to his death again" Giles tried to protest this but couldn't because Buffy already moved onto the next point, "I took Spike to the vineyard with me and as I kept Caleb distracted with a little try and kill me, in other words I didn't engage him, Spike found a hidden compartment and I followed him down into it. Then used-" She paused, then turned to Spike, who handed the skythe to her, he never once touched it. Buffy wasn't even sure if he could or not-this to slice him in half"
"Caleb's dead?" Kennedy asked.
"Buffy nodded and said, "He's split."
"Afterwords, we brought Xander home."
"What about the apocalypse?" Robin Wood asked.
"I know what I'm going to do, it just needs to be put into action."
"And the wish," Willow whispered.
"Oh yeah. well, you know those shoes I told you about the other day that I said I've been wanting since my freshman year of high school but they were too expensive even back when I was Spordelia," Xander smiled at the Spordelia before he realized what Buffy was saying.
"You-You-You used your wish on shoes?"
"No. Of course not."
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief before becoming curious again.
She walks over to the front door just before it swings open. Buffy making sure even with her short body to hide the identity of the person until after everybody knows this person has made intimate contact. They break the hug and for the first time in a year see the face of Tara Maclay.
She bows her head in shyness and says, "H-h-hi ever-every-o-o-one."
Buffy turns and walks out the door with a smile on her face.

So do I, but I was basing this fanfiction on Joss Whedon's original idea of Tara coming back in season seven. However Joss couldn't get this idea off the ground.
