In my opinion, I don't see how Wes dying benefits the story at this time. I mean, yeah, there's the 'cause-these-characters-pain-and-suffering-and-torment-and-some-emotional-tortore-for-the-hell-of-it' factor, but you know, Oni's moved on, and she was the character who would have the most emotional resonance if he died, so...
But feel free to find a way to prove me wrong.
