I just read Theory of Relativity last night (good episode, by the way) and was going to post this in that thread, but it's only somewhat related so I decided to start a new one instead.
Anyway, I've always been interested in how humans would behave without a soul in the Buffyverse. I know it was explored somewhat on the shows but I wouldn't mind a more comprehensive study.
But the reference Emcee made to this in that episode made me think that it doesn't need to be studied. And that kind of brought me down a bit. It's no fun to me if most people who lose their soul die and that the ones who live are extremely likely to become serial killers. Especially that last part, but maybe it makes sense.
My view was that a person without a soul would be much more likely to be a complete asshole. Beyond that though, at the very least wouldn't the thought of spending life in prison deter a good chunk of people from committing the more serious crimes? I guess I can’t assume that.
There's something that happened to me the other day that I can relate to this. I'm driving home from work on a fairly empty road. There are two older kids riding bikes on the other side of the street. One of them decides to be funny and come into my lane and head right for me. I had plenty of time and room to swerve out of the way so nothing happened other than me getting irritated for a minute.
Soulless me? I'm probably not the one losing that game of Chicken. But that doesn't really clarify anything for me because I always figured acts of violence to varying degrees would increase in the case of a soulless outbreak.
So I don’t know. I guess the reason for this thread is really just to see if anyone else is interested in this subject. So, uh, are you?
